French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier indicated during his Libyan visit that French President Jacques Chirac will visit Libya later this year.
Barnier said after a meeting with Libyan Foreign Affairs Minister Abdurrahim Salkan that his Libyan counterpart showed him the letter that indicates Chirac has already accepted the invitation.
Barnier, who talked with Libyan leader Muammer Qaddafi and Libya Prime Minister Sukru Ganem, expressed that France and other European countries are very pleased that Libya is reaching out to Europe.
Libya minister Salkam also thanked France for its efforts to remove the European Union (EU) embargos on Libya.
Barnier and Salkam agreed that they would like to develop the economic relations between the two countries.
The Libyan foreign minister said, "We would like to develop our economic relations with France, especially in the oil sector."
Two weeks ago, EU representatives voted in favor of removing the embargos, including the one on weapons, against Libya.
EU foreign ministers will make the final decision during a meeting to be held on Monday (October 11).
Chirac's pending Libya visit has been evaluated as a new development that will bring Libya closer to the Western countries. It will be the first visit of a French President to Libya in 20 years.
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and British Prime Minister Tony Blair also visited Libya earlier this year.
German Chancellor Gerhard Schröeder plans to visit Libya on October 15.
